So this time of year i'm usually adorned in my bronzed beach goddess glow thanks to the beautiful weather and beaches of Australia, but instead I've got my lovely moon tan on under my puffer vest (insert the not very impressed emoji face) I guess they don't call NZ the land of the long white cloud for nothing. So here's a few tricks i use to pull off my Aussie beach bum look without actually laying around on the sand all day.
Every Thursday i do my weekly tan ritual, and i always use my fav St.Tropez express self tan.
Usually that morning i'll shave my legs and i always use exfoliating mitts to give my body a really good scrub, you want to make sure all of the dry skin is gone, and any tan left from the previous week. Before applying your tan make sure you're fully dry and there's no moisture left on your skin.
To apply the tan i use the St.Tropez mitts, ive tried lots of different brands but i think these ones apply the most even tan without sucking up too much of the product. I find it best to apply the tan in some natural light so you can see how even your application is.
"The Key to an AMAZING tan is to pre exfoliate and to post moisturise!"
Apply 2-3 pumps of the mousse onto your mitts, rub your mitts together to even out the product and start from your legs and work your way up your body using circular movements, i use the last of the tan residue to lightly do my hands and feet, you don't want to go crazy around those areas or they will develop too dark.
To do my back i twist the mitts around so that the foamy part of the mitt is on top of my hands, then looking into a mirror reach around to get the upper middle part of your back, or you could just make your partner or a friend get those areas for you (that used to be my husbands job until i figured out how to do it myself)
I always do a very thin coat on my face, just so my makeup matches my body.
I leave my tan on for 3 hours, but if it's your first time using a self tanning product, i suggest leaving it on for 1-2 hours before washing it off. While your tan is developing wear something very loose, i usually wear a baggy t-shirt dress while my tan is on, and make sure you don't sit on the lounge without a towel.
Once you've finished developing, hop in the shower and lightly wash your tan off with a little bit of body wash, don't scrub or use any kind of sponge, your hands will do the trick.
And after every shower make sure you moisturise! This will help prolong your tan, and it will stop it from fading off looking patchy.
Don't worry if you feel like you've just washed all of the colour off, it will continue to develop over the next few hours.
For my face i use the Mecca Cosmetica Tinted Moisturiser. It has a lightweight coverage, a UVA & UVB SPF 30 protection and it feels really hydrating. I then add a tiny pump of the Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminizer, mix the 2 together and apply evenly to face and neck. Even though the tinted moisturiser has a slight shimmer to it, i find adding a tiny bit of the Illuminizer just gives you a bronzed glow and it really highlights your cheekbones.
After i do a really rough blow dry on my hair, I use my large GHD irons to create big textured waves, make sure you use clean sections working from the bottom of your hair working your way up, if you have normal sized GHDs or a barrel tong that will be fine as well, you will just need to really shake out the waves to make them bigger.
Once this is done i turn my head upside down and run my fingers through the waves to separate them. I then give my hair a really good spritz of the Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray. Not only does this sea salt spray create the most amazing textured waves, it smells delicious!! It pretty much feels like i'm on holidays every time i use this product!
So there's some of my tips and tricks on how to be a fake Aussie, Fingers crossed this Nu Zuland weather turns around asap!
